I was going to write a post about cookies and then I thought – who the hell needs cookies in January?? So, I thought I would take a moment to talk about the holidays and what makes them so special….at least to me.
Yeah – we’ve all seen those hallmark images. You know the ones: Norman Rockwell’s rosy-cheeked children, fires ablaze, Bing Crosby’s White Christmas floating through the room.
The reality never quite looks like the images we have been sold. Our families are so much more real than those one-dimensional characters. Great Aunt Jenny still comes over with that oh so famous – and horrible (shh don’t tell her) twice baked casserole for the potluck. Uncle Steve will most definitely have one last scotch. The kids will be jacked up on sugar, over stimulated and tired…. and probably (unless you are one of the disciplined ones) that little nest egg you put to the side for the holidays has been spent…..uhrm or overspent;)
This brings me back to what it is about the holidays that is so special. It takes a village. I always come back to that saying. In this busy world that we live in, our crazy families become so much more important. All of our idiosyncrasies and imperfections are what make our lives so rich. It may not look like the images we see on the greeting cards but it’s all so much better than that. In honor of the melting pot we call family I’ve decided to post a recipe for turkey stock.
May you and yours have a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! Happy New Year!
